The only problem is, I took days just to work out how to do simple things. In contrast I have managed to get a copy of Reason (for Windows) and it seems a fairly big leap in terms of DAWs (possibly because Garage Band needs all the extra settings eased out of it and in other big DAWs they are mostly all there right in your face - so many button and dials)! So in those terms they obviously don't compare - it is not an 'industry standard' DAW as has been pointed out. I've been using Garage Band for a few years, but only as a home recording tool (I haven't even scratched the surface of what it is actually capable of as I haven't needed to), but I found it very easy just to get on and record, like most things Apple it is fairly intuitive. or are they dragging and dropping some loops to create some rubbish mindless pop/rap/edm?

Is it an epic movie soundtrack, a lush multi-track symphony, complex Jazz tunes with weird time signature changes, are they plugging in various instruments to record. What age are the students and what type of masterpieces will they be producing? I guess really we should be asking what they will be using it for.? Is it for a music course leading to qualification/employment or is it just 'music' lessons?

I have used many different software DAWs to record and produce music over the years and the list of bands I've worked with both live and in the studio is quite extensive. But it's not the best tool for the job, and if we're setting kids up to go out and be creative, surely we should give them the best tools so they can do well if and when they decide to study something musical at university?Īt this point I should state that my degree was in Music Technology, and before I worked for ICT Direct I was both a live sound and recording sound engineer. It's a great piece of free software (although you pay the Apple tax in that you have to fork out for their hardware to use it).
